1. Enter a normal Save the World mission outside Ventures.
2. Loot at least one weapon or trap during the mission.
3. Contribute to the mission objective rather than remaining idle.
4. Successfully complete the mission.
5. Return to Homebase and open the research prompt or schematic research area.
6. Use the token to turn one of the eligible weapons or traps from that completed mission into an identical permanent schematic.

The one-token limit

You can only hold one of Schematic Research Tokens in Save the World at a time. If you earn another while already holding one, the game automatically resolves the oldest token instead of letting tokens stack indefinitely.

Epic says the automatic choice prioritises the highest rarity and Power Rating among eligible items. If those are tied, the selection is random. That makes it worth using a good token before immediately running another loot-heavy mission.

What does not give a token
